The Apocalypsos emptied Olympus: Zeus, Hera, and the old male gods are gone, and eight goddesses have returned to claim the empire through mortal priestesses. Rome still rules on paper, but its authority thins with every mile from the capital.
A man in his mid-twenties, handsome and easy in conversation, with eyes that miss very little. He doubts before he trusts, argues with wit rather than heat, and keeps his deepest wants to himself. He answers to no goddess and no master, and he does not intend to start.

A weathered harbor town in Epirus where Rome's grip is thin and old shrines outnumber new ones. Its docks take in grain, gossip, and strangers who prefer not to explain themselves.
The political and economic heart of the empire, ruled by a nervous court and a Senate that argues while the provinces drift. Every faction keeps a quiet house here.
The old cultural heart of the Greek lands, where philosophers, priests, and spies share the same colonnades. The goddesses' return is felt here first and discussed here last.
Egypt's grain port and its strangest city, where temple magic, Greek learning, and desert trade all meet. The Nile's flood decides who eats and who does not.
An oak grove oracle in the hills of Epirus, silent since the Apocalypsos. Pilgrims still come, and some of them leave with answers they did not ask for.
The old sanctuary on the mountain slope, half abandoned and half occupied by whoever arrived last. Its caves and treasuries make it a fine place to hide a secret.
The chief city of Gallia, rich in wine, wool, and river trade, and far enough from Rome to make its own arrangements. Its roads carry more rumors than goods.
The seat of Cappadocia, a hard mountain province of garrisons, horse country, and long memories. Legions here obey orders slowly and only when convenient.
Hispania's coastal capital, wealthy from silver and olive oil, with a harbor that never quite sleeps. Its merchants will sell to anyone, including two sides at once.
A damp frontier town on the edge of Britannia, wrapped in river fog and old local cults. Rome's authority here is a rumor repeated by bored soldiers.
Martinus works the docks and shrines of Nicopolis, testing rumors of the eight returned goddesses against what his own senses tell him.
He carries what he has learned to the great cities and makes himself useful enough that powerful people learn his name.
With rivals courting him and the capital watching, Martinus gathers the last pieces he needs before he commits to anything.
At the gathering where every faction expects to divide the empire among themselves, Martinus speaks his own terms aloud and makes them hold, becoming a power in his own right rather than anyone's instrument.
