The Surplus of Hope
You are Cal Henderson, a Disaster Adjuster for the BMD. You've been sent to Oakhaven to 'Balance the Sheets',which usually means making sure people lose their jobs or break their legs to compensate for their good fortune. However, you've decided the system is rigged. Your goal is to navigate the suspiciously perfect streets of Oakhaven, avoid the scrutiny of your BMD handlers, and teach the locals how to weaponize their statistical anomalies to crash the BMD's central servers.
What this world is
The Surplus of Hope is a public AI-powered interactive story world set in a In America, "Success" isn't just hard work; it's a regulated commodity. The BMD is a secret federal agency that manages the "Luck Supply" of the United States. Every lottery win, "overnight" viral success, and miraculous survival is orchestrated by underpaid agents in a windowless building in Des Moines, Iowa. The Plot: "The Surplus of Hope" The Conflict: Due to a massive accounting error in the BMD’s "Inspiration Division," a small, unremarkable town in Nebraska called Oakhaven has accidentally received a 400% surplus of "Golden Opportunities." The Incident: The town is becoming a utopia. Every scratch-off ticket is a winner. Gas prices are 10 cents. Everyone’s high school sweetheart has moved back to town and is suddenly single. The problem? Luck is a zero-sum game. If Oakhaven stays this lucky, the rest of the Midwest is scheduled for a literal rain of frogs and a total collapse of the cellular network. The Clever Twist: Cal is sent in to "Balance the Sheets." But he realizes the BMD isn't just regulating luck; they’re hoarding it for the top 0.1%. He decides to go rogue, not by making the town unlucky, but by teaching the townsfolk how to "weaponize" their luck to take down the BMD’s main server in D.C. Adult/Cynical: It’s a metaphor for the "Rigged System" but played for laughs. It deals with the idea that for every winner, there’s a loser, and the "referees" are just guys in bad suits. Deep/Clever: It explores the American Dream as a literal, bureaucratic machine. The Humor: It’s dry, fast-paced, and uses profanity as a punctuation mark for Cal’s exhaustion with the universe. setting.

Caleb "Cal" Henderson
A man who looks like he’s been through a tumble dryer full of gravel. He’s a "Disaster Adjuster" for the BMD. His job isn't to make people lucky; it’s to distribute the "Residual Spillage"—the bad luck that’s left over when someone else gets too much of the good stuff.

6Oakhaven Main Street
The street is disgustingly clean and vibrant. Every storefront has a 'Grand Opening' or 'Record Sales' sign, and the birds are singing in perfect four-part harmony. You can hear the constant 'ding' of cash registers from every open door. A golden retriever is currently helping an elderly lady cross the street while balancing a tray of free cupcakes.
The Lucky Clover Diner
A classic chrome-heavy diner where nobody has ever had a bad cup of joe. The 'Guess the Weight' jar is empty because everyone keeps guessing correctly. Steam hisses from a pristine espresso machine that never clogs, and the smell of bacon is literally intoxicating. The jukebox only plays your favorite songs.
BMD Mobile Command Unit
A nondescript, windowless grey RV parked behind the hardware store. It hums with the sound of servers and air conditioning, leaking a faint smell of ozone and stale office air. This is where your supervisor, Sterling, watches the luck-meters spike with increasing fury. It is the only place in town where the Wi-Fi actually fluctuates.
The Hollow Grain Silo
An abandoned silo on the edge of town that Cal has surreptitiously converted into a 'off-grid' luck-shield. The air inside is cool and smells of dry dust and old metal. It's filled with jury-rigged electronics and maps of the BMD's regional network. A single flickering lightbulb illuminates the center of the floor.
Oakhaven Gas-N-Go
A gas station where the price per gallon is stuck at 10 cents due to a 'mechanical error' that hasn't been fixed in weeks. The trash cans are full of winning scratch-off tickets that people threw away because they already have too much money. The air smells faintly of cheap gasoline and extremely expensive cologne.
Town Hall Plaza
A grand marble building that looks way too expensive for a town of 4,000 people. The Mayor is currently giving away 'Surplus Grants' to anyone who walks by because the town treasury literally won't stop growing. A fountain in the center seems to be sprouting actual silver coins along with the water.
Story Arc
The Golden Handshake
Cal arrives in Oakhaven, where the air smells like victory and the local coffee is suspiciously perfect. He needs to find a way to damp the luck before Sterling realizes he's actually enjoying himself, or worse, before the neighboring town of Fairview literally implodes from the residual bad luck.
The Squeaky Wheel Gets the Grease
The locals are starting to smell a rat, and it isn't just the ozone leaking from Glitch's jury-rigged gear. Fairview is currently being pelted by frozen iguanas, and the Oakhaven citizens are getting restless about their forced prosperity. It's time to pick a side before the paperwork buries everyone.
Zero-Sum Shitshow
Luck saturation is off the goddamn charts. The BMD is prepping a 'Total Probability Reset,' which is a fancy way of saying they're going to erase Oakhaven from the map to save the regional math. Cal is one bad cup of coffee away from a total meltdown.
The Great Accounting
Sterling is ready to push the 'Reset' button on his shiny BMD console. Cal stands in the doorway, smelling of cheap gas and desperation, ready to either balance the books or set the whole damn ledger on fire. It's time to decide if Oakhaven keeps its luck or if everyone goes back to being miserable like the rest of the world.
